Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
